Do you recognize the corner above? It’s Kingston at the corner of Montreal and Princess in the ’60’s! If you got that right, this section is for you! The types of customers who like old school stuff usually also love landraces, they really go hand in hand!
A landrace refers to a cannabis strain that has developed over many generations in a specific geographical region. These strains are typically indigenous to their native area and have adapted to the local climate, soil, and environmental conditions over time. Landrace strains are often pure or nearly pure in their genetic makeup, meaning they haven’t been extensively hybridized with other strains. They are valued for their unique characteristics, including specific growth patterns, cannabinoid profiles, and terpene compositions that reflect their origin. Landraces are important in cannabis breeding as they provide genetic diversity and the potential to introduce distinct traits into new hybrid strains. Examples of famous landrace strains include Afghani, Thai, and Malawi Gold.
Old-school cannabis and hash from the 1960s and 1970s, is nostalgic and often referred to as “hippie weed,” was markedly different from modern strains. It was typically grown outdoors or in simple indoor setups without today’s advanced breeding techniques. Varieties were often landrace strains or heirloom cultivars originating from regions like Afghanistan, Colombia, Mexico, and Thailand. These strains tended to have lower THC levels compared to contemporary cannabis, often around 5-10%, but they were rich in other cannabinoids and terpenes, contributing to unique flavours and effects. The high was generally milder and more balanced between body and cerebral effects, promoting relaxation, creativity, and a sense of euphoria. The aroma profile leaned towards earthy, spicy, and herbal notes, reflecting their natural origins and minimal processing. Overall, old-school cannabis was cherished for its natural appeal, diverse effects, and cultural significance during the counterculture movements of the era.
