What bong is right for you? That depends on you! Glass is easy to clean, but can be breakable (like a drinking glass). In the long run, glass tends to be more economical overall because it doesn’t have to be replaced as frequently as acrylic (which is difficult to clean properly–think about how spaghetti stains plastic).
Bongs are usually defined by height and thickness (for example, 7mm thick and 18″ tall). Thickness refers to the tube before it was blown. The mouthpiece tends to be 1.5″ to 2″ wide. The larger the mouthpiece the more air there is to intake.
Bongs sometimes have percolators, which come in many different styles and are intended to break up and cool down the smoke with smaller bubbles. Bongs with percs tend to be a bit more challenging to clean, and require a bit more lung stamina (not necessarily capacity) to fully smoke a bowl. However, as satisfying as it may be it is not advisable to pull-through a bowl, as there tends to be unsmoked cannabis.
Most downstems nowadays are 14mm wide (which means a 14mm bowl fits in), and the downstem length can vary. 4-5″ is standard, 6″ or more is considered long. You need to know the full length of the downstem and width to replace it (although again, it is probably 14mm).
You would use a ground joint glass (the part that looks sandblasted and opaque) 14mm bowl with a 14mm downstem. Some older styles come with 28mm ground joint glass, 16mm, 9mm slide styles with grommets (which are the same size as metal bowls).

Pipes are good for on the go, and are usually cheap and cheerful. The distance from bowl to mouthpiece is short, and smoking pipes can sometimes be a little harsh if you aren’t used to it. Glass and metal pipes are usually very easy to clean, they use the same cleaner as bongs. Wooden pipes are super cool, and certainly smoother than a smaller, shorter pipe, but they are a bit difficult to clean because wood is porous.
Avoid disappointment, and just give them what they want!
