Week 7: First day of VEG 2!

Week 7: First day of VEG 2!

Posted by Jennawae McLean on 2020 Jan 17th

Strains in the tents:  White Widow, Spanish Mango, Juice Box, Ayahuasca Purple.

Grow method:  Indoor SCROG (although the screen is not on yet) with LED.

LED Details:  2x California Lightworks 1100 + 2x California Lightworks 550, on our VEG 2 setting of 85: Red, 99 White, 99 Blue for 18 hours.

Gear I am using:  Pure Tents, California Lightworks 1100s and 550s LEDs and controller, Pure Pots (20 gallon), Promix HP, solo cups in various sizes, Lock Down Pads, Greenhouse Powder Feed.

I am now in the first day of VEG 2 cycle which increases red (to promote stretching--I want my plants to stretch as much as possible because I want the screens to fill up.  Increasing the red also makes the room extra warm so I decrease the light hours down to 18 (it has to be down to 12 to flower, but has to be over 16 not to stress it out).  I am also watering more heavily now that we have a real root system growing.  Now that these topped plants are growing I won't top them again for at least 3 nodes of growth.

Strain name:  Spanish Mango
Genetics:  An early phenotype of Soma's Somango bred out by a friend in the North of Spain.
Flowering time:  8-9 weeks
Yield:  Average
Level of difficulty: Medium
Notes:  I don't know why these pics flip around on upload, but as you can see this Spanish Mango really took well to topping and 2 new growth sites have popped up.  It is really growing short and wide.  We need it to grow up at least another node before we start training it in the SCROG net.

Strain name:  White Widow
Genetics:  Brazilian X South Indian
Flowering time:  8-9 weeks
Yield:  Heavy
Level of difficulty:  Easy
Notes:  Okay so I was really sure I was going to murder this one and replace it with a spare Juice Box.  Over the last week as it was growing I was trying to diagnose the deformity.  Is it self-topping?  What the hell?  Then as these new leaves began to emerge I realized there was a WHOLE EXTRA SET OF LEAVES!  What I was experiencing was whorled phyllotaxy which is where 3 sets of leaves grow instead of two.  This is a fun mutation because naturally it will grow like more of a bush.  But it's a recessive trait that can't be isolated and rebred--it will disappear in the next generation.  So all we can do is enjoy it when we have it!  The only concern I have with short internodal spacing like this is that it will be tough to SCROG.  I am excited to see the effect that extra red spectrum will have in stretching this sucker out!

Strain name:  Ayahuasca Purple
Genetics:  Red River Delta X Masterkush
Flowering time:  9 weeks
Yield:  Heavy
Level of difficulty:  Easy
Notes: This one is seeming to still be the strongest of the bunch with big internodal spacing that will be very easy to scrog with (vs. the super tight compact WW)  As you can see the topping also did well and we have 2 new sites coming up in it's place and we will start to see a much more bushy appearance!

Strain name:  Juice Box
Genetics:  (Cannalope Haze X Juanita La Lagrimosa) X Jack The Ripper
Flowering time:  10 weeks
Yield:  Average - Heavy
Level of difficulty:  Medium
Notes: You can clearly see that the topping took on this one!  In fact, it looks a little FIM'ed (topping will produce 2 sites, where FIM'ing will produce 4 or more new sites).  I think I have made the decision to murder my little Juice Box baby.   I am sad, but I knew this day may come when I germinated her.
