Week 20: Getting close to a chop!

Gear we are using:  Pure Tents, California Lightworks 1100s and 550s LEDs and controller, Pure Pots (10 gallon), Promix HP, Dollar Store EZ Pods, Green House Powder Feed, BlueSky Organics Organic Reactor, Safer's End All miticide concentrate (plus water and a spray bottle), microscope, Secret Jardin Oscillating Fan, dehumidifier.

We are finally getting close to chop time!  Everything is looking and smelling amazing, and I know I have a lot of work ahead of me!  This week I just kept flushing all the plants with cold water to make the purple come out more.  Again, if you have to flush anyways, a few purple leaves won't hurt anyone!  I am the grower in the house and I am also the primary trimmer.  Lorenzo is great at a lot of things but he hates trimming and it makes me feel like a friggin saint for doing it all by myself.  "Look at my bountiful harvest I share with you."  Canonize me now.  I did get help one night from my good friend Pat.  I will admit that.  He can be canonized too.

I know my plants are ready when the I look at the buds through a microscope (45x or 60x) and see trichomes that are 80-90% milky, 5-10% amber and 5% clear. Amber is the beginning of the trichomes degrading, and too many amber trichomes will even change the intended effect of the cannabis (making it more couch locky).

Strain name:  Sour Key OG
Genetics:  Amnesia Haze X (Super Lemon Haze X OG Kush)
Flowering time:  8 weeks
Yield:  Heavy
Level of difficulty:  Medium
Notes:  Smelling maybe the best overall?  I am super pumped to cut these down, but I know I am going to be waiting another week or two for my favourite smelling ones--the hazey tall ones in tent 1.  I am so pumped, I can't wait to make an extract from this as well!  You can also see that the cold water treatment just further pronounced the colour in the one plant in tent 2, but it had virtually no effect on the rest of the plants!

Strain name:  Pineapple Express
Genetics:  Big Bud X Hawaiian Skunk
Flowering time:  8 weeks
Yield:  Heavy
Level of difficulty:  Medium
Notes:  I already started cutting these down and let me tell you, they have been a friggen nightmare to trim.  The buds were mostly smaller than the other tents with a super high level of pain in the ass leaves to trim.  Not only that, but they seem to have grown into a viney mess under the canopy (in the space between the two nets).  I find Skunk based strains can be a pain to trim--really shaggy and just a lot of work.  In any case, when I am starting to chop, I always look for the biggest pain in the ass (meaning the one that I have to do the most work on) and I just go at that one first because I am a procrastinator.  Pat helped me trim this strain and I am forever in his debt (well--actually he owed me because I got heat stroke trimming his over the summer AND brought mites back into my garden from his--but we are even after tackling this monster together).  Don't let my shitty attitude towards all the leaves keep you from this or other Skunk based strains--just be aware you might owe a friend a beer or two after they help you trim it.
Strain name:  Russian Doll
Genetics:  Kuban Sativa x Northern Lights x AK-47
Flowering time:  8-9 weeks
Yield:  Medium
Level of difficulty:  Easy
Notes:  Ermagherd.  I can't wait to cut down these babies.  The cold water has affected 2/3 of the plants and they are just looking like beautiful little amethyst gems!  I was thinking I would harvest this first, but as you can see I still have a few white pistils.  Pistils are not the be all and end all way of telling if a strain is ready.  I would use judgement in combination with checking the trichomes (as mentioned above).  These leaves are also just snapping off really easily, so I am pretty pumped to have a huge harvest of what looks like a bunch of baby arms.
